CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Himalayan Raptor Migration Project - Autumn 2026
Project: The Himalayan Raptor Migration Project
Location: Thoolakharka, Central-West Nepal
Organisation: Himalayan Raptors
Help Us Monitor a Global Conservation Priority
The Himalayas are one of the world’s most critical migratory corridors, and Thoolakharka is a globally significant bottleneck for migrating raptors. Each autumn, thousands of raptors of over 30 species—including the endangered Steppe Eagle and the near-threatened Himalayan Vulture—migrate through this unique ridge.
Data collected at Thoolakharka is vital for understanding population trends across the Central Himalayan Flyway and directly informs global conservation efforts. Following a notable rebound in Steppe Eagle sightings in 2024, it is critical that we conduct a comprehensive, full-season count in 2026 to determine the future of this species.
We Are Looking For
We are seeking dedicated volunteers to join our team for the upcoming autumn migration season. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on field experience, contribute to vital citizen science, and witness one of nature's most spectacular migrations. We host one volunteer at a time, with new volunteers cycling in upon the completion of the previous placement.
Ideal candidates are:
- Passionate about raptor conservation and field biology.
- Willing to work in a remote, high-altitude field environment.
- Able to commit to at least 2 weeks during the autumn migration season (count runs from 10 Oct to 10 Dec 2026).
- Comfortable with outdoor work and long hours of observation (8-10 hours daily) in unpredictable weather conditions (e.g. rain, clouds, cold fronts and harsh sunny days).
- Previous experience in raptor identification is a plus, but enthusiasm and a commitment to learning are paramount.
Why Join Us?
Unparalleled Observation: Due to a unique "funnel effect" caused by local meteorology, birds often migrate within 20–80 meters of the watchsite, offering the best view of these magnificent apex predators anywhere in the world.
Impactful Conservation: Your work will contribute to a long-term dataset that informs international conservation policy for declining species.
Field Skills: Learn migration monitoring techniques, species identification, and data collection protocols from experienced researchers.
Food and Accommodation
Himalayan Raptors will provide basic shared accommodation and all meals for Nepalese student volunteers. Professional volunteers—both from Nepal and abroad—are responsible for their own food and accommodation expenses during the project period.
How to Apply?
We invite interested individuals to be a part of this project.
To apply, please send a commitment letter expressing your interest and the duration you will be available (mention dates you will be available).
